I’m so excited to announce that my upcoming workshop at Joali Maldives was featured in Forbes! I will be leading both paper and clay workshops for Joali resort guests over the course of two weeks from December 23rd to January 6th. Through the workshops, a paper and clay artworks will be created inspired by the Maldives coral reefs. Families will be able to join me at the Joali Art Studio during the day to learn about reefs in the Maldives and create a unique paper/clay artwork to take home.

Joali is beginning its series of visiting-artist-run workshops.

This series will begin with a two-week program by Zemer Peled, the creator of the spa-based coral sculpture, who is known for her porcelain artworks inspired by natural forms. From December 23rd to January 6th, the artist will be leading paper and clay workshops for guests on the island. You’ll be able to join the artist in the Joali Studio each day to gain insight into the Maldivian coral reefs and create your own paper and clay artworks to take home with you at the end of your stay. You’ll look at the colors and shapes found within the reef while experimenting with different ways of working with the materials, from moulding the clay to paper folding and painting.

Giving insight into her work for Joali, Peled explains: “My sculpture, Maldives Vibes, was inspired by the rich underwater world of the Maldives coral reefs. It is primarily white in color to symbolize the coral bleaching that has affected the Maldives, but the striking colors that embellish the sculpture serve as both a memory of the vibrant coral reef and encouragement for its future protection. Over the course of two weeks, participants of my workshop on Joali will create their own paper and clay sculptures inspired by the Maldives coral reefs.”

Joali’s general manager, Steven Phillips, then elaborates on the resort’s overall plans: “We want some of the same artists who created work for the island to come back for two weeks to three months to host workshops in the island’s studio. I want them to use interesting mediums like painting on silk or clay. We’re putting a kiln in for Zemer, so she can do ceramics with the guests, then we’ll keep the kiln here. At the same time, I’m asking the artists who come over to leave an artwork behind, so we’ll get a new piece of artwork from each set of workshops we host.”

Frederick R. The exhibition is showing from July 21, 2019 through July 19, 2020 in Sacramento, CA.

From raw textures to meticulous details, to glazes bursting with color, the works in Cool Clay represent one of the most exciting and expansive fields of contemporary art. This exhibition highlights a selection of notable acquisitions that strengthen the Crocker Art Museum’s ceramics holdings in both diversity and scope, the majority by artists not previously represented in the permanent collection. These include influential figures like Rudy Autio, Jun Kaneko, Tony Marsh, Edwin Scheier, Nancy Selvin, and Akio Takamori, as well as more recent leaders like Peter Olson, Zemer Peled, Brian Rochefort, and Dirk Staschke. Although the artists pursue a great variety of approaches and techniques, each embraces the experimental and playful sensibility this versatile medium engenders. Spanning six decades of studio practice, this exhibition celebrates the ground-breaking achievements of 20th-century ceramists as well as those who today continue to reimagine the possibilities of working in clay.

The exhibit has been featured in Art Daily.

Crocker Art Museum

216 O Street

Sacramento, CA 95814

https://www.crockerart.org/

Zemer Peled is acclaimed for her unconventional relation to porcelain, as well as her examinations of the beauty and brutality of the natural world. She utilizes a process of creation and destruction to make sculptures consisting of thousands of porcelain shards, resulting in works that can be read in relation to art historical tradition, outsider art and natural phenomena. In 2014, Peled was shortlisted for the #YoungMasters Maylis Grand Ceramics Prize. She is currently visiting artist in residence at California State University (CSULB).

This marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles. Featuring large-scale sculptures and smaller objects, the exhibition highlights Peled’s labor-intensive process that bridges narrative and formalist elements. Peled utilizes a process of creation and destruction to make sculptures consisting of thousands of handcrafted porcelain shards resulting in works that can be read in relation to art historical tradition, outsider art, and natural phenomena.

The sculpture’s narrative impulses lean to encounters with the otherworldly—like complex topiaries marking a not-so-distant land--yet they remain distinctly tied to earth’s patterns. This conflation of the foreign and familiar creates a frenzied dislocation in the work. Inspired by migratory habits of birds, a sweep of feathers, and cycles of change, the works spiral outwardly in rhythmic patterns, interpreting not only the dynamism of nature, but also the startling strangeness of a life lived in transition.

Using white and colored porcelains, Peled transforms sharp slivers of porcelain into feathers, petals, leaves, and spines that describe objects of unknowable origins: seductive but untrustworthy. The forms are complexly ordered from the inside out, often bulging or spilling over with textures both delicate and severe. In some works, large scale-like ceramic pieces appear airy, delicate, and fluffy, as if one's breath might break it. In others, Peled's fragments are geometric barbs that mysteriously take on an alluring form - offering a sense of softness despite a sharp actuality. The forms are never static; the visual dance of sharp ceramic parts conveys a sense of constant movement. Like a murmuration of starlings, the sculptures appear to shift shapes as you move around them, an identity becoming and unbecoming in front of you.

The act of making for Peled is a feat of endurance, improvisation, and adaptation with the aim to embody a fleeting but fundamental feeling of mystery. The construction of her sculpture parallels negotiations any outsider makes in encountering a new world as they delicately construct a self that is both adaptable and resilient.

Mark Moore Gallery
5790 Washington Blvd., Culver City, CA 90232
T. 310.453.3031
F. 310.453.3831
www.markmooregallery.com

November Exhibitions 2015

LA:
Art Culver City Los Angeles - A Group Exhibition
November 5–December 19, 2015
Mark Moore Gallery
5790 Washington Blvd.
Culver City, CA 90232, USA

NYC:
Lluis Barba: Travellers In Time Young Masters: Focus On New Work
November 4–22, 2015
The Cynthia Corbett Gallery
Site/109 | 109 Norfolk Street | Les | New York NY | 10002 | USA
RSVP Private View: Thursday 5 November, 6–9 Pm

Showing new body of work at COLLECT 2015: The International Art Fair for Contemporary Objects at the Saatchi Gallery, London.
